When I opened the curtains this morning,
the first thought that popped into my head was, “It’s going to snow!”. The temperature had dropped dramatically
overnight and the clouds were heavy and grey. As I left the house, I told the
girls to watch out for the snow. I stopped at the garage to buy myself some hot
chocolate and as I ran back to my car, I felt the sleet falling down on me and stared in amazement at
the sky. Stopped at the traffic light, I sat staring in awe at the flurries of
snow swishing around my car. I glanced over at the car beside me, the two men in that
car had reacted in the same way as I had. They looked over at me – and the
3 of us just started to laugh. And so the day began, with loads of excitement
for Jozi residents. I kept phoning home to make sure the girls were getting to
see the snow too – and all I wanted to do was rush home to take them off
somewhere the snow was settling so that they could have some fun.
The most unusual thing about the snow
today was that it snowed intermittently throughout the day – in fact, as I sit
here, at 22h55, it’s still coming down.
It was tough to focus at work – with all
the excitement, and all the photos circulating on FB. Finally B and I could
stand it no longer and we rushed outside to get some pics;
There is a part of me though that can’t
help but think, as I sit here in my warm and cosy bed, of the people around the
country who are not equipped for the biting cold of this night. Those people
who live in tin shacks – or worse. Some won’t make it through the night. Tomorrow, try to do just one thing to help another person
warm up a little – even if it’s just to buy the man at the garage a cup of
coffee.
xoxo
