First race of the season...tick!
32' 47"...beat my last time...tick!
I think the fact that I managed to beat my last time was because I was the only one on the starting line!! Due to a mix up with times, the race started at 8 when it was only meant to start at 9, so I arrived at 8h15 to discover that the other peeps were already on their way (bar a few others as confused as I was). So I jumped into action, kissed S and the girls goodbye and ran off - I was frustrated but at the same time it was cool that I didn't have to wade through the walkers - and there were loads of them! I caught up after a few minutes with the crowd and went sailing past them down Beyers, feeling like I was the only runner in the race. As I made my way toward the Nedbank Green Mile, and the last km of the race, the 10km runners started passing me. Running with them made me feel even cooler (is there such a word!) - I could pretend that I was one of them :-) As we entered the Green Mile and the crowds on the road started cheering and the school trumpeters started trumpeting, I felt a rush of pride and a tiny (very tiny) inkling of what it must feel like to complete a real marathon, but am happy - for now - to settle for a good 5km time, and to start training for a 10km race.
