On Mother's Day my Mom introduced me to a venue I fell in love with! I've been back once since then - and can't wait to go again! It's the kind of place where I would be happy to spend the entire day - the vibe is so chilled that when you eventually drag yourself away from it, you know you've experienced a real breather from Jozi's hectic pace!
Less than 20 minutes from my side of town - Northgate - in Muldersdrift, is a divine spot called Something Country. Imagine rolling lawns and little tables dotted around, far enough away from each other that one doesn't feel crowded. There are tables inside too - and a fireplace for those cold wintery days when one just can't bear the thought of spending another day at home. The food is delectably delicious and the menu is small so you don't even have to think too hard about what you want to eat. It's real country food and the portions are huge. I've tried a yummy curry; pork chops with veg and creamy mash potatoes - and a mouth-watering piece of lemon meringue.
But none of that is the best of it...... it's the ideal place to take the kids. I so often find that if we go to a venue with swings and jungle gyms that I just don't get to relax as J is a swing-freak and a fearless daredevil. She would sit for hours on a swing if she had someone to push her, and she thinks nothing about climbing to the top of the highest jungle gym but then can't get down. At the back of Something Country is a hidden gem that I almost don't want to tell you about because I want to keep it all to myself..... trees to climb, a dirt bicycle track, a sand pit and a slide, an old jungle gym that is neither too high nor too difficult to manage, and a big enclosure with the cutest guinea pigs. The kids keep themselves busy while you drink wine - just make sure you have a designated driver (!!). Actually I found that my inner child was as excited about the place as the kids were and she also wanted to climb trees and walk the balancing beam :-)
So the next time you're looking for somewhere to go, throw the kids and their bikes into the car - and head out to Something Country.
...and if you're a cycling fanatic, it seems to be a popular place to leave your car at while you head out for a ride before breakfast, or lunch.
...and if you're a shopaholic - which I'm not and so can't really tell you what there is to buy - I can tell you that there's a lovely shop to spend your money in!

I love the tiny feet of my daughters - they're soft, round and perfect. Those little feet have so far to go, so many kilometers to travel. As individuals, our girls have such amazing adventures to embark on and I will do my best to never hold them back, remembering always that their lives and loves are their own to discover. I will guide them as best as I can, I will love them with all of my heart and I will encourage them to be the people they want to be.
